At Mahaska Health, the polysomnographic technologist works under medical supervision to perform services integral to the Mahaska Health Partnership Sleep Center, including sleep testing, education, and quality assurance.
Requirements
- Performs sleep testing on a varied population in an accurate manner consistent with policy and procedure.
- Explains the procedure to the patient and/or other appropriate individuals.
- Educates patients with probable diagnosis and treatment options.
- Remains current in new advances in sleep medicine, including procedures, equipment, and legislation.
- Proficient in properly titrating CPAP/Bi-level pressure management and advanced sleep disorder treatment procedures.
- Follows protocol for the titration of oxygen.
- Keeps accurate record of patients, equipment, and charges.
- Calibrates equipment before use.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to patient’s medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac dysrhythmias, respiratory events, and seizures.
- Ensure safety and welfare of all patients, including those patients with special needs.
- Ability to read and understand SDS sheets.
- Ability to handle hazardous material.
- Check availability and function of emergency equipment.
- Properly disinfect and sterilize appropriate equipment, electrodes, and transducers.
- Take the needs of the individual into consideration when performing procedure/setting up modality, i.e., speaks slower and/or louder while working with an elderly patient, or comforts the mentally handicapped individual.
- Takes the emotional and spiritual needs of the patient into consideration while performing the test.
- Implement and document quality assurance activities to ensure optimum performance in all aspects of the sleep lab.
- Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Is familiar with all equipment used; can troubleshoot equipment as necessary.
- Evaluates equipment for purchase and submits recommendations to department director.
- Puts away supplies, equipment, etc, as needed.
- Keeps an inventory of departmental supplies.
- Participates in QA/QI/PI activities.
- All other duties as assigned or requested.
