HEALTH PHYSICS LEAD

To perform lead/advanced level duties in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

Requirements

• Conducts audits of radioactive materials sub-licensees to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Performs patient radiological surveys post-therapy to determine eligibility for release under federal and state standards.
• Performs calibration, functional testing, and preventive maintenance of radiation detection instruments in accordance with established schedules and regulatory requirements.
• Conducts routine and specialized radiological surveys, interpret results to recommend corrective actions, and implement and oversee the institution’s Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Program covering lasers, MRI fields, RF sources, UV systems, and other electromagnetic hazards.
• Reviews and provides technical guidance on facility design, shielding, and operational practices for ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources, collaborating closely with clinical and research personnel.
• Compiles survey findings, audit results, and inspection notes into comprehensive technical reports with actionable recommendations.
• Contributes to the development, review, and improvement of radiation safety policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols; participates in incident response and corrective action activities.
• Delivers radiation safety training across relevant modalities including radioactive materials handling, X-ray/fluoroscopy, contamination control, and non-ionizing radiation safety.
• Manages students completely.
• Offers guidance and leadership to employees and/or students in their daily activities and assigned projects or tasks.
• Participates in assessing the performance of personnel (without direct supervision responsibilities).
• May be involved in managing projects.
• Carries out duties within the scope of University policies and procedures.
• Analyzes problems, adapts guidelines, and exercises independent judgment within accepted practices.
• Makes recommendations that impact policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to the supervisor.
• Handles challenging customer situations with tact and diplomacy.
