Substation Apprentice Electrician

Role Overview

The Apprentice Electrician is a training position to develop the knowledge and skills a Journeyman Electrician will need to maintain system substation facilities. The role involves mechanical maintenance of large electrical equipment, including power circuit breakers, transformers, and other substation equipment. The position requires working at heights, in all climate conditions, and being available for overtime and emergency call-out.

What You Will Do

The Apprentice Electrician will be responsible for performing live line work in substations, using hot sticks and gloving methods. They will also be responsible for installation and commissioning of new substation equipment, large power transformer maintenance and repair, and gasket preparation. Additionally, they will perform plumbing, carpentry, rigging, sheet metal, calibration, machinist, and welding tasks.

Requirements

• Experience with electrical and mechanical systems
• Two-year technical degree in Electronics, Electricity, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, Electrical/Mechanical
• Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules and regulations
• Relevant, work-related experience with basic transformer theory, single-phase, and three phase motors
• Knowledge of electrical symbols and formulas
• Ability to use precision measuring tools
• Knowledge of Vernier Scales and Standard Scales
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Good hand and eye coordination
